Curriculum

The Master Degree Program in the science of extension and development communication is conducted in a lecture pattern using a semester credit system (called credits or sks) with a study load of minimum 38 credits, including seminars and theses, which are spread into 4 semesters (2 years) and can be taken less than 2 years or shorter. Academic activities are carried out with the guidance of lecturers who holds Doctoral degree and Professor. Course schedules are held from Monday to Sunday at the Postgraduate Building of Kampus Unand Limau Manis, Padang. The learning process is transparent, scientific, holistic, integrative, and contextual, and participatory/dialogical supported by adequate learning facilities.

The curriculum consisting of two major groups: compulsory and elective courses, that are spread into four semesters. Students who are not coming from relevant study program of their undergraduate degree, may be assigned to take Matriculation courses.

Semester I: four compulsary subjects = 12 credits

  1. Introduction of Development Extension (3 cr)
  2. Introduction of Development Communication (3 cr)
  3. Community participatory learning (3 cr)
  4. Groups, Organization and Leadership (3 cr)

Note: On the tenth week of the first semester, all students are required to submit his/her research topic/idea, in order to set up their thesis supervisors.

Semester II: two compulsary subjects and two elective subjects

  1. Compulsary (6 credits)
    1. Research Methodology (3 cr)
    2. Program Planning and Evaluation (3 cr)
  2. Electives (choose two = 6 credits)
    1. Media of extension and development communication (3 cr)
    2. Communication of development entrepreneurship (3 cr)
    3. Management of training (3 cr)
    4. Institutions and organizations of extension (3 cr)

 

Note: At the end of this 2nd semester, under the guidance of their respective supervisors, all students are expected to produce a draft of their research proposal, and be ready to be examined in the 3rd semester.

Semester III: four compulsary subjects and two elective subjects

  1. Compulsary (3 credits)
    1. Statistic (2 cr)
    2. Seminar proposal/colloquium (1 cr)
  2. Electives (choose one-three = 3-9 credits)
    1. Contemporary issues of development (3 cr)
    2. Strategy of extension and development communication (3 cr)
    3. Development of extension resources (3 cr)

Note: With only 3 credits of required subject in the classroom, and there has been a draft proposal from the Research Methodology lecture in Semester 2, students are expected to present their research proposal (colloquium) at the beginning of semester 3, and continue field research and produce a publication of their scientific works.

Semester IV: two compulsary subjects (7 credits)

  1. Seminar (1 cr)
  2. Thesis (6 cr)

Students who are not coming from relevant study program of their undergraduate degree, might be assigned to take Matriculation courses for these two subjects:

  1. Statistic
  2. Introduction to extension and communication
